AJHSJ 2008 Vol19 Part1
This issue of the Jounal is dedicated to the memory of the late Morris Zion Forbes (cover photo). In this issue is the last article by Mr Forbes on the response of Australian Jewry to the 'Wailing Wall Incident' (1928 ) when the Kol Nidrei service at the Western Wall in Jerusalem was deliberately and forcefully disrupted by British police to satisfy Islamic objections to Jewish worship. Other aricles deal with Dr Billigheimer in Australia, the life saga of Alec Klippel in Australasia, the notorious Abe Saffran, and the history of 'frum' Jews in NSW. Russell Stern recounts the amazing story of WD 'Karri' Davies a mining engineer firstly at Broken Hill, then in South Africa where he was a major player in events leading to the Boer War.

AJHS(Vic) members receive with this Part of the Journal a CD holding the first three volumes 1939 - 1953. Cover pix is of Caroline Isaacson, who in a sideshow to the Kimberley Scheme of Dr Steinberg provided a link to Critchley Parker, who advocated settlement in SW Tasmania. The article by Dorothy Graf is a here and there story about the Graf divided family during WWII – some in Melbourne – others still in Germany – with a partialy happy ending in that Benno Graf starved to death but Blanca Graf – after two years in Thereseinstadt – was in March 1945 send to Switzerland along with 1200 others from Thereseinstadt as part of the amazing wartime deal with Himmler Swiss - Franks for Jews.

There are two papers in this issue dealing with remarkable aspects of the careers of Australian Jews. Trevor Cohen tells of the support given at a crucial time by Emanuel Solomon to Sister Mary McKillop -- a future saint. Joe Lederman discusses a recent biography of Eliazar Margolin, an Anzac hero, who played a key role and worked with future Israeli leaders in developing the Jewish Legion, that in time became the IDF. There are book reviews of the recent autobiography of Sir Zelman Cowan, and two reviews of the controversial recent book by Anthony Lowenstein.

A special issue of the Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal. This work is the autobiography of Aaron Blashki, who was president of the Great Synagogue, and of the Sydney Zionist Society early in the twentieth century. Blaskhi, who “knew everybody” of note from Deakin to Monash to Weizmann to the editors of the London Times and Mail, who visited Palestine at the start of the British Mandate, provides some unique perspectives. This special issue was edited by Dr Hilary Rubinstein, who wrote a useful foreward.
