Each volume of the Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal has a contents index, which not only lists articles by author and title but also by category of paper and by keywords - especially names.
This cumulative index, was prepared by Col Choat by optically scanning all the published indices. All entries from all the separate indexes are included in the database that is organised by alphabetical order of the entry. The entire database is a browseable document that is downloadable in full if you click on Complete Index File. This large file, 1.7 Megabytes in size, is only suitable for browsing and search those with a high speed (cable, ADSL etc) internet connection and a well-endowed computer. However even at slow data speeds, you can view the cumulative index one first letter at a time by selecting from the row menu below:

NOTES:

  • The category codes are as used in the original published index issues.
  • The volume number is shown in Roman numerals to the right of the entry
  • Names in square brackets after an Article entry are the name(s) of the author(s) of the article.
  • Names in square brackets after a Book Review are the names of the reviewers.
  • The letters 'ff' or 'f' indicate that further reference to the subject will be found on succeeding pages.
  • The letter 'A' indicates that subject matter referred to will be found on the inside back cover of a part of the Volume opposite the page number given.
  • The letter 'Y' indicates the page number in the Report of the York Street Synagogue, 1845, as reprinted by the Society in 1944.
  • There was some duplication of page numbering in some volumes. The figure (1) after the page number indicates the first occurrence of the page number, and the figure (2) indicates the second occurrence.
  • In Volume VIII the pagination in Part 1 was duplicated in Part 2. The letter 'a' indicates that the subject will be found in Part 1.
  • The index for Volume X contains entries from "Yismach Yisrael: Historical Essays to Honour Rabbi Dr. Israel Porush", issued by the Society in 1988. Entries from "Yismach Yisrael" are denoted by the letter 'F' (Festschrift) after the appropriate page references.
  • In Volume XVI, as asterisk after a number indicates that the entry occurs within an essay written by a school student.
