THE SABBATH SPORT CONTROVERSY
In 1927, Rabbi Brodie in Melbourne issued a ban on Jewish soccer teams
playing on a Saturday. From the 1930s the Judean League in Melbourne found
itself in the firing line. The issue became a hot topic, prompting letters
to the editor and editorials in The Jewish Herald and The Jewish Chronicle
for a number of months. Over the years since then, it has continued to be a
controversial matter. Rabbi Apple will delve into the issues surrounding
this problem.
The AJHS is delighted to welcome Rabbi Apple back to address our
Society once again and reminds members that this lecture will be held on a
MONDAY evening at Mandelbaum House
